Planting Cress Seeds

Planting Cress Seeds
Our Mr. Bloom impression! Today we planted cress seeds. The children put soil into their own plant container and then sprinkled seeds in top before watering them. We hope to check their progress everyday. Cress seeds should grow within a week so the little monsters will be able to see something happening quickly!

Dinosaur eggs

Dinosaur Egg
Today we made a dinosaur egg! Inspired by 'dinosaur' week on cbbeeies and an episode of 'Topsy and Tim'. We made a paper mâché dinosaur egg with a balloon and tissue paper. It's a great cutting and sticking activity, made all the more exciting by the discussion around dinosaurs!

You will need:
- a balloon (and lots of puff to blow it up!)
- different coloured tissue paper
- children's scissors
- pva glue (otherwise known as gloopy glue!)
- a paint brush
- felt top pen

First cut the tissue paper up into small squares.
Mix some glue with some water
Stick the tissue paper squares onto the balloon using lots of glue until the balloon is covered. Over lap the pieces of tissue paper as you do this and smooth down with plenty of watery glue using the paint brush.
Allow to dry.
You can add cracks with the felt tip pen.

Marshmallow snowmen pictures

Create a marshmallow snowman picture.....

You will need:
- mini marshmallows
- glue
- felt tip pens
- sugar  paper

Draw a rough out line of your snowman with a crayon or felt tip and then the children can stick marshmallows around the outline to create a picture. Add details with felt tips or other collage materials. The little monsters enjoyed working with this edible medium and ate most of the marshmallows before they made it to the page... luckily there were plenty left to create a snowman.

Chocolate and raisin crispy cakes!

A classic! Chocolate and raisin crispy cakes..... Yummy!
The little monsters loved making these although there was a lot of taste testing going on! First the little monsters lay the cup cake cases out on a tray. Then we melted 200g of chocolate in the microwave, stirring regularly. Next we poured in 150g of raisins and 200g of coco pops (you can use rice crispies but we used these as they were in the cupboard) mix throughly. Finally spoon into the cup cake cases and allow to set.

More sponge printing!

Christmas wrapping paper! Get the little monsters to make wrapping paper for Christmas presents. I cut a holly leaf shape out of sponge and printed in green onto large sheets of sugar paper and we made the berries with finger prints in red paint.

Sponge printing shape pictures

A shape tractor and trailer....

We made shape pictures using shapes cut out of sponge and paint. You can use circles, squares, triangles and rectangles. We discussed the shapes and the little monsters made a tractor and trailer (with a little bit of help!). You can make towers, castles, houses or people. Or just an abstract shape picture.

Poppies

Remembrance Day is approaching and lots of people are wearing poppies. The little monsters were asking about them, so we looked at some pictures of poppies and used this as inspiration for our art work!

We cut a poppy shape and a leaf shape out of a foam cleaning cloth. Then used these shapes dipped in red and green paint to print poppies. Finally after the paint had dried we added the black centres with black felt tip pens. Simple but effective.
